So far, so good...my first AB-1 that I've ever messed with...still getting a feel for it. It is well built...I would recommend one if you're in the market. Even completely filtered, I'm getting 100 watts DK; and between 400 and 500 watts swinging. That's with nothing more than a 5 watt DK/25 watt swing as an input. All reports come back loud and proud...I have yet to have a single "you're over modulating" comment...most are completely taken when they figure out I'm miles from them, and not right near them. The SWRs are the giveaway...1.05:1 amp off, 1.1:1 amp on, 1.15:1 amp modulating...compared to the other amp I had that would literally swing into the 5:1 range, that's pretty cool. I do need to run some bigger wire...I'm only feeding it with 8ga...need to step up to 4ga (I have a roll, just need time to install it).

Yup, that's my next project too....I need to upgrade to 4GA. Glad to hear the reports on the amplifier though. They look nice!!! |

Even running what I've got, I have made several local contacts...one was around 26 miles out, which I didn't feel was too bad. And that was one of those "instant" contacts...not a "what'd you say?" contact. I had a bunch of local bases stirred up Saturday night...they all thought I was talking on a base, couldn't believe it was a mobile. Most were around 10 miles out, and at that range I was giving them 9#s...

My main problem is finding a place to key from...Cabelas is OK, but I'd rather have someplace a little closer or a little more remote...

Hell, I'll come up there to Cabella's to key with you anytime! I just like an excuse to tell the wife of why we need to go to Cabella's. Her usual answer is "No, You don't need anything else from there". There should be a bunch of places out that way that you could hit. My fiance's sister lives over in Topton. There's a whole shitload of us that key just about every Friday and Saturday night about 30 minutes south of there.

Well, got it back today...it was a bad relay. I was having issues with losing my RX, and toggling the on/off seemed to affect it sometimes. It got to the point I'd lose my RX when I'd unkey. Talked with Col., and he had me ship it back to the amp builder. They found a bad relay, which was replaced. Can't say anything bad about the whole deal, Col. is excellent to deal with and the amp works great. Anyone could have a bad part, it happens. I am now pushing it with this DX959...it doesn't hit as hard as the PC76, so I'm only seeing around 350 watts. The funny part is that I'm hitting the local shop with 9 s-units now, not 8 as before...so that is good thing. The thing still talks good, SWRs don't jump around, so I should be putting the majority of that 350 watts on frequency. Heading to Washington on Friday, should be there sometime Sunday night...gives me lots of time to play.

I'm getting good reports...between the radio sounding good, and the amp being clean...every one tells me it sounds extremely clean... ts amazing the difference in sound between a clipped radio and non-clipped radio

Well, I got to play a bit... This thing will shoot skip all day long! I'm basically driving around with the SSB switch "on" so I can shoot SSB or AM at my choice. I'm really impressed with it...I'm going to find a place to do some skip, and see if it runs hot (and to see how many watts it pushing on SSB)...it will dim/flicker the lights as I drive down the road on SSB. I'm curious to see the amps its pulling, to dim lights, while cruising (from a 137A alternator AND two batteries), with 8ga wire means its pulling some serious amps on SSB. I got to get the 4ga wire installed, and I'm going to switch the battery that the amp pulls from (to see if that makes a difference). I may also buy a capacitor (stereo) to take some of the peaks of the SSB spikes. More than I expected from a 4x1446 being pushed with a barefoot 959. I get nothing but good reports on power and quality of the signal!

Good deal! I was running my 5 pill on the existing 8 ga that I had run. My lights were dimming too and if I wasn't on the throttle, my setup would make some horrible noises. Sounded like an underpowering issue, so I ran a 4ga along with the 8ga. Then I made a 4ga jumper directly from my altenator to the battery. Cant forget about the ground, so I made a small 4 ga ground jumper right off the neg battery post to the frame. No more headlight dimming and no more underpowering......

Sideband will do this also because of the sudden drawing of high amps on your peaks. When you run AM your carrier will draw a good ammount of amps, which the alternator will react to and your peaks wont affect it as much, but when you have no carrier and your peaks are drawing say 70 amps out of nowhere, it will show. Where is the 76? If you are not using it anymore I want it. On that note. Why are you using a 959? theyre horribly off frequency even from factory and sound like crap on sideband. I don't want to burst your bubble, but those galaxy cb's are bad, i'm surprised they even passed the fcc requirements. Someone left one with me, it's stock, 2khz off frequency, horrible sound on sideband (even when you tune in on it). Unless you got a good one out of the bunch,in that case i'd like to hear how it sounds.
