So, I wonder exactly how much of a benefit it would be for me to switch from my W1000 to a W5000???

From what I've read, the big difference is power handling. Larger coax and wire in the coil. I have a 1000 and won't be dumping it! binrat

You dont have to do all that. We could just swap coils for a couple of minutes to see if the receive is any different.

The only difference really is the power handling capabilities. But I have noticed that the RX sensitivty on the 5000 isn't as good as the 1000. But that is just my opinion from what I have experienced on my set-up.

I've run both... The magnetic bases use the same coax...there is nothing different between a 1000/5000 as far as coax is concerned. The coax can be replaced, but if you run much power you might see the paint bubble under the magnet. I saw just a little increase in both TX/RX going from a 1000 to a 5000. I would not spend the $$ to upgrade toa 5000 if I already had a 1000, not worth the little gain. The biggest gain was going from a magnet mount to a true roof-mount...SWR is pretty much 1:1 across all 40.

steved: you are right. I went from mag mount to the true through the roof mount and noticed almost perfect match across all the channels. binrat

I have a 1.2:1 on my mag 1000 and I never adjusted the whip. I could get it lower if I cut the whip a little bit, but a 1.2:1 on all 40 is fine by me. |

Yea, I've got a 1:2 on all 40. I'm not concerned with the swr's. My receive's all jacked up though.....
