Question reguarding not only the 2517 but any radio having only a 5 digit frequency counter. On ssb how do you know for sure you are dialed into 27.3850 exactly. You dont have the 6th digit to tell you for sure if your there. Now as we all know on am being a smidge off either way makes no marked difference but in ssb its all about being dead nuts on frequency.Anyone have any hints or tricks to share?Reason I ask is I was planning on buying a 2980wx at tax time, well as it turns out they are on backorder and my guys at rrcom.com tell me they are being very evasive as to when any new ones might become available.Hmmmmm.....possibly the demise of the 2980? So the next closest radio to the 2980 is the Galaxy dx2517.Nice radio and all but for one nagging thing.....well it naggs me anyway. It only comes with a 5 digit counter Mad Not to mention it costs like $55.00 more for 1 less counter digit and no weather recieve.Alright Im tired of typing, give me a day or 2 to find something else I dont like and want to vent about.Shawn

Yes there is always be the chance that I might save a couple bucks on the deal going elswhere but most shops charge for peak tune and conversion too.R&R does all that free with the purchase of the radio.I would also throw in they do a darn good job of it in my opinion.Lets also factor in ok I buy the radio from Copper cause they have a slightly lower price,I pay them to peak tune and convert and well Im already at or higher than R&rs price. Now I gotta pay top dollar to ship ,the radio and wait even longer to gbet my new radio. Now what if something goes wrong with the radio,I have to pay to ship it out to copper or Galaxy whichever the case may be and wait god knows how long to get my radio back.Sounds like a heck of a lot of headaches to me when I can jump in the car and be at R&R in an hour, buy my radio at a fair price and take it home that very day. Also its very convenient to take the radio in to get checked out if you have any issues. They have always taken my radio and had it fixed in an hour or less and I go back home with my radio the same day.Just seems a lot more convenient to me.I know how ya feel about em though Henry and thats never going to change just like my feelings towards the place are not likely to change barring them doing anything out of the norm as to how they treat me and handle my problems.Shawn

I hear you there. I'm sort of at a loss for just jumping into the car and criusing to the shop. The closest "shop"to me is a truck stop 11/2 hours away in good weather, 2 1/2 in bad. If I want bargain stuff then its ok.
But then again, if I was like you guys and have shops around I might be livin in the barn. Very Happy

I agree that having the 6th digit is nice, but when I talk on SSB I 'tune' in receive with my ears - not the freq counter. Even 2 radios that are properly aligned are going to be slighty off frequency on the receiving end due to propagation. That's why you have a clarifier. Wink As long as the radio was aligned by a tech that knows what he's doing then nobody should have a difficult time dialing you in.

So I am guessing, correct me if I am wrong but.....With a dual clarifier setup with the course open and the fine locked you would what start out with both knobs top dead center and use your course to tune into the person you are talking to till they sound normal to you rite? I know its a stupid question but I have only used ssb with either single locked clarifiers like a 148 or a grant or with microprocessor controlled radios like the 2950 where they are usually dead nuts on unless extremely cold.Shawn

I open the clarifier, then i crank it to the right about 2 hours. It makes the guys on 27.385 lsb very happy.
But that's ok, they're all a bunch of flower

Honestly, if i wanted to talk cb ssb, i would use an hf rig, its much nicer.
And for what you are going to spend on that dammnn thing, you could buy a nice used icom 718.
It's all about the bang for the buck, you have good AM radios, that would be awesome on sideband with all the dsp filering and rf preamps and stuff.

Some good points made - a HF rig would be far superior to any 'CB' or "Export' radio for SSB use, but (imo) they do not perform quite as well on AM. If you do a lot of SSBing it may be worth the investment. You are correct about starting with the course and fine clarifier in the 12 o'clock position. As bluebird stated you use the fine control to dial in the station you're receiving. No matter what radio you decide on do yourself a favor and DO NOT unlock the clarifier. An unlocked clarifier changes your rx and tx frequency simultaniously. Here's the problem ...You dial someone in then key up and give them a shout. As you're talking they dial you in - which changes the frequency you just dialed in. Now you have to dial them in again - which changes the frequency they just dialed in. Now they have to dial you in again - then you have to dial them in again - then they have to dial you in again...and on and on and on. See where this is going? With the clarifier locked your tx frequency will remain consistent. When you talk to someone else you may need to readjust your clarifier a bit to dial them in (due to propagation and their radio alignment) but most can be dialed in with just a slight adjustment of the fine clarifier.
